Who is the better Sam sidekick in fantasy?

Post by El Canuck » Tue Nov 25, 2014 11:40 am

Since wanton polling is the new fad on the board, I thought I'd get in on that. Who do you think is the better Sam sidekick in fantasy?

Samwise Gamgee - The lovable, huggable Hobbit pal of Frodo who sticks with him through thick and thin and sees him all the way to Mordor. (Portrayed by Sean Astin in Peter Jackson's LotR film saga)

~ OR ~

Samwell Tarly - The lovable, huggable, outcast highborn pal of everyone's favourite bastard: Jon Snow who sees him through thick and thin and even manages to get a Wildling gal of his own to fall in love with. (Portrayed by John Bradley in the HBO series)

They both blubber and cry a lot, but they manage to get shit done that their main character pals can't seem to do without them. You'd have to think that on their own, Jon and Frodo would never have gotten as far as they did without their respective Sams at their side.

Samwise snatched up the ring when Frodo got kidnapped, and was the only person to give it up freely. Tarly's got a ways to go before he's beating that.

A solid point, but Tarly killed a White Walker, that's got to count for something.

The dragonglass killed the Walker, not him.

He poked it with the Dragonglass.

Largely accidentally. He flailed and it just happened to be incredibly successful.

Poor Tarly, can't even get credit for the one thing he did.
