NHL 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Post by El Canuck » Sun Apr 13, 2014 3:21 pm

With St. Louis' 3-0 loss to Detroit, the brackets for the NHL 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs became set in stone. Here's how the first round is going to look:

Eastern Conference:

Atlantic Division:

A1. Boston Bruins
vs.
W2. Detroit Red Wings

A2. Montreal Canadiens
vs.
A3. Tampa Bay Lightning

Metropolitan Division Division:

A1. Pittsburgh Penguins
vs.
W1. Columbus Blue Jackets

A2. New York Rangers
vs.
A3. Philadelphia Flyers

Western Conference:

Central Division:

C1. Colorado Avalanche
vs.
W1. Minnesota Wild

C2. St. Louis Blues
vs.
C3. Chicago Blackhawks

Pacific Division:

P1. Anaheim Ducks
vs.
W2. Dallas Stars

P2. San Jose Sharks
vs.
P3. Los Angeles Kings

The games start on Wednesday, April 16th. Make your predictions, get hyped and enjoy the excitement of the NHL Playoffs.

Interesting trivia:

- All but one original six team made the Playoffs this year: The Toronto Maple Leafs.

- Out of seven Canadian teams, only Montreal made the playoffs.

- This will be the first time Detroit and Boston have met in the playoffs since 1957.

My own predictions:

Eastern Conference:

Atlantic Division:

A1. Boston Bruins
4-2
W2. Detroit Red Wings
I think Detroit will give Boston a good fight, but the power of the Bruins will just be too much for the Wings to entirely overcome.

A2. Montreal Canadiens
4-3
A3. Tampa Bay Lightning
I think the Habs will live to fight another day, but not without Tampa Bay dragging it out to the bitter end.

Metropolitan Division Division:

A1. Pittsburgh Penguins
4-1
W1. Columbus Blue Jackets
Pittsburgh won't have much to contend with here, but the Blue Jackets will get a few points and a game, maybe two, on the winning side.

A2. New York Rangers
4-2
A3. Philadelphia Flyers
I'm not seeing Philly winning this one, but I'm seeing them being game contenders for the Rangers all the same.

Western Conference:

Central Division:

C1. Colorado Avalanche
4-3
W1. Minnesota Wild
Minnesota are a long shot to win, I would love to see them do it, but I can't see them being able to edge the Avs, they'll fight tooth and nail though.

C2. St. Louis Blues
4-3
C3. Chicago Blackhawks
On one hand you have a team that's just come off a season they haven't seen since Brett Hull was on the team and looking to finally win a cup for the first time in forty years of franchise history. On the other is a team trying to build a dynasty the likes of which it hasn't seen in over sixty years. This will be the balls to the wall series to watch by my estimation.

Pacific Division:

P1. Anaheim Ducks
4-0
W2. Dallas Stars
I'm seeing a sweep on this one. Dallas just barely made the playoffs, they have a decent team by any other standards, but Anaheim are a powerhouse.

P2. San Jose Sharks
4-2
P3. Los Angeles Kings
I'm seeing this one as an upset. The Sharks are fierce enough to get the job done, but the Kings just got their first cup a few years ago, the taste of victory is still on theirs tongues, they want it again.

One more day until the puck drops for the playoffs. I'm looking forward to this and I've decided I'm rooting for Minnesota and St. Louis. On one hand you have one of the hottest hockey beds in America that's never brought home a cup, on the other is a team that's tied with only Buffalo for the oldest team without a single cup to their name. I think it's time for St. Louis to end that this year. If they couldn't do it with Brett Hull, this is their next best chance since then.

I will not be cheering for Montreal, as their fan base will never again shut up about it if they win.

The Pens are having a "Gold Out" at CONSOL Energy Center tomorrow night. Kind of like a "white out" thing they had last year during the playoffs where fans wore white shirts. Anyway, fans going to tomorrow night's game will receive a free gold shirt. A big screen is also being set up at the old Civic Arena location across the street for those who couldn't get tickets or whatever.

Puck drops on Pens-Columbus at 7:30 tomorrow night. Should be fun.

Awesome. I won't be upset if the Pens win either, I'd place them as a top pick in the Eastern conference to root for.

1-1 for in the Habs/Lightning game, Pens/Blue Jackets are underway, but just barely into the first.
