Given that it's December 8th, (In some parts of the continent at this point anyway) which is the anniversary of Lennon's death and approaching the Christmas season, this song seems more than appropriate:

So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas (war is over)
For weak and for strong (if you want it)
For rich and the poor ones (war is over)
The world is so wrong (if you want it)
And so happy Xmas (war is over)
For black and for white (if you want it)
For yellow and red ones (war is over)
Let's stop all the fight (now)

Happy XMas (War is Over)
John Lennon

Also on December 8th, ten years ago to the day the world lost Dimebag Darrell Abbott of Pantera. Although written before Dime's passing, this song was later dedicated to him and is played live in his memory regularly:

I've been around this world
Yet I see no end
All shall fade to black again and again
This storm that's broken me
My only friend

In this river all shall fade to black
In this river ain't no coming back
In this river all shall fade to black
Ain't no coming back

Withdrawn I step away
Just to find myself
The door is closed again
The only one left
This storm that's broken me
My only friend

In This River

Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere

Here they come to snuff the rooster
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah [2x]
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, ya know he ain't gonna die

Walkin' tall machine gun man
They spit on me in my home land
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
Got my pills 'gainst mosquito death
My buddy's breathin' his dyin' breath
Oh god please won't you help me make it through

Rooster
Alice in Chains
Dirt

One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite grunge albums.

Keeping with the AiC theme.

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

It is such a different album compared to Facelift, Dirt and the self titled release in '95. It really stands out in their Layne Staley era material as totally unique. While the others all have their minor differences, they do generally have the same AiC sound, Jar of Flies though...It's Jar of Flies, that's all I can say and it's amazing.

When you were young
and on your own
How did it feel
to be alone?
I was always thinking
of games that I was playing.
Trying to make
the best of my time.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

This is a must-play song for me tomorrow:

All is quiet on New Year's Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's Day
On New Year's Day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

Can't get this one out of my head since seeing the last Hobbit movie:

I saw the light fade from the sky
On the wind I heard a sigh
As the snowflakes cover
My fallen brothers
I will say this last goodbye

Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away

Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the sea

Under cloud, beneath the stars
Over snow and winter's morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home

And though where the road then takes me,
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell

Feel no pain, but my life ain't easy
I know I'm my best friend
No one cares, but I'm so much stronger
I'll fight until the end
To escape from the true false world
Undamaged destiny
Can't get caught in the endless circle
Ring of stupidity

Out of my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

Escape

Ride The Lightning

Easily my favourite Metallica album and a fantastic track from it. I can listen to this album on repeat all damn day and never grow tired of it.

This band is finding its way back into my regular rotation again:

We are spirits passing through the doors of time
With an invitation heard before we find
Shadows on the mountainside
Eagles find the souls they hide

And the outcast child enchanted by the sun
Will he seek his shelter never knowing one
Shadows on the mountainside
Eagles find the souls they hide

More Tea Party, on a serious Tea Party kick:

You see
I've walked on that floor
And i've walked it before
You could even crawl it
I've been through the strangest of mazes
Somewhat self induced hazes
I got through
And now back to you

This is what you want
This is what you need
This is what you want
Beg for free

Because you're safe now
While hearts are cold
You just wait until dust turns to gold

From the acoustic side of an incredible double album:

It's my turn this soul won't burn so throw me in the fire
Trophies earned and lessons learned, from wicked little liars
We could pave new roads with their cold gravestones,
And wind them through the pines
Should I stay or should I go alone? I cannot decide

What if I do, Lord?
What if I don't?
I'd have to lose everything just to find you
What if I do, Lord?
What if I don't
I'd have to lose everything just to find you

What if I do?

Don't know how I haven't heard much of this album before, given how much I enjoy City & Colour, but there you have it.

Circles and cycles and seasons
For everything there's always reason
But it's never good
Never turns out as it should

No one ever held you
No single moment of truth
But if you were mine
I would've looked into those eyes
And said,

Tell me the words you long to hear
And I'll sing them loud and clear
Let me heal the wounds you've held on to for all these years
Break the cycle
Break the chains
'Cause love is louder than all your pain
Than all your pain

Break The Cycle

From The Tea Party's newest album:

I can't blame this game
All my cards have been dealt
I'm trumped, I've been tamed
And lately now, lately now
I don't even feel like myself

So, my love
There's a postcard that I'll send

It's from the ocean, it's from the ocean
The ocean at the end

The Ocean at the End

Got the horns up for some metal tonight. The Muse has been turning me on to some of the newer, screamy acts she likes so much, but I find it hard to care when I can't make out a word the singers are saying. The musicmanship is top notch, but it leaves me wanting for guys like Bruce Dickinson:

On a cold October morning
As frost lay on the ground
Waiting to make my move
I made no sound

Waiting for the mist to cover all around
I carefully picked my time then took the wall

I'm sick and tired of running
The hunger and the pain
A stop to look about then off again

Being at the wrong place
And at the wrong time
Suspected of a hit that was my crime

I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name

This one's been in my head tonight:

Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
It's the wrong time
For somebody new
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse

Is that alright?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright?
If u don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright
With you?

And I can still remember, you know I can still hear your voice, your voice.
Although your silence, your silence still rings so clear.
And do you think, and do you think I would call
just to hear you breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe?
You always knew, you always knew that just one word would dry up all my tears.

And I know there is
Some place I can go
Where no one knows my name, my name
Where no one knows my name

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

Your Song

In my head since I heard it again last night during the first Hunger Games credits.

Run, run, run away
Buy yourself another day
A cold wind's whispering secrets in your ear
So low only you can hear
Run, run, run and hide
Somewhere no one else can find
Tall trees bend and lean pointing where to go
Where you will still be all alone
Don't you fret, my dear
It'll all be over soon
I'll be waiting here for you
