Never heard of MGMT, but I like what I'd reading.

Caught the Who reference too,

Hope I die before I get sold, in reference to the line from My Generation of "Hope I die before I get old."

Reminds me of this:

Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours,
Don't be late.

Come As Your Are

I took my time, I hurried up
The choice was mine,
I didn't think enough.

I'd be very surprised if you haven't actually heard an MGMT song. Their early singles were massive hits in the summer of 2008. Look up Time to Pretend, Kids, or Electric Feel and you should recognise them instantly. Three fantastic pop songs that earned them a lot of early success.

The borrowed Who lyric is alluding to their effort to avoid being packaged and sold by a mainstream music industry that is more interested in catchy beats and record sales than songs that have a deeper meaning, which hit them hard when most people seemed to ignore the other good stuff on their first album in favour of the three aforementioned songs. A lot of their second album is based on that theme.

I never caught that Blink 182 lyric before. I like it. Those little nods to other artists that appear in songs are pretty cool.

Key word there is pop, I'd have to listen to pop stations to remember MGMT. Very few pop songs stick out memorably to me after 2000, 90's Pop I can pick up almost instantly just because my sister was still living at home and had pop stations on all the time. After she graduated school and was out of the house, that streak largely ended. I can think of maybe two pop songs that stick out to me in the last few years even, one of them in Say Something by Great Big World, the other is a cover of a classic rock song, Ellie Goulding's cover of Your Song. And I guess If You're Gay by Great Big World. And that Somebody I Used to Know song that was around a few years ago. Outside of that, they all largely sound the same to me.

I see. They're mainly a psychedelic rock group, but the songs I mentioned definitely qualify as pop.

Ellie Goulding's cover of Your Song is really nice. It's what got me into her. I really liked her first album.

Corey Taylor does it again:

I'd cross the sea to you
I've left myself deserted here again
I'd cross the sea to you
My pieces are too broken now to mend

In the middle
Under a cold black sky
The sun will only burn for you and I
In the moment
Before I lose my mind
These hours don't mean anything this time

Give me a sign
Show me the line
Maybe tonight
I'll tell you everything

Smelly Cat, Smelly cat what are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, smelly cat it's not your fault...
They won't take you to the vet.
You're obviously not their favorite pet.
You may not be a bed of roses,
And you're no friend to those with noses.
Smelly cat, smelly cat what are they feeding you?
Smelly cat, smelly cat it's not your fault!

Know me broken by my master
Teach thee on child of love hereafter

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Would?

Time for a Canadian icon:

Hello ruby in the dust
Has your band
begun to rust
After all
the sin we've had
I was hopin' that
we'd turn bad
Old enough now
to change your name
When so many love you
is it the same
It's the woman in you
that makes you want
to play this game.

Cowgirl in the Sand
Neil Young
Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

*Originally appeared on that album, although my personal favourite version is the toned down acoustic version he recorded live in Massey Hall, Toronto in 1971.

Time to insert some Soundgarden into this mix:

You wired me awake
And hit me with a hand of broken nails
You tied my lead and pulled my chain
To watch my blood begin to boil
But I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Digging into Our Lady Peace again:

Living by the hour
This grass wasn't greener I found
I wanted you to know
Well I dug you up a rainbow

The mystery's gone
So bring back the sun
We'll bury this hate
And build it with love

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me

As I come clean...
I wonder everyday, as I look upon your face, uh-huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would save, oh no

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave...

Oh, you really saw my naked heart
You really brought out the naked part
I don't know what you were doing
I know I just want to thank you for thinking of me

I want to take you for all that you are
I know our worlds seem far apart
I want to see you for all that you do
I want to thank you

Thank You Too!

Time for some of my favourite (albeit short lived) Grunge band:

Chloe don't know better
Chloe is just like me, only beautiful
A couple of years' difference
But those lessons never learned
Did you know?

Chloe does the tables in the French Quarter
She's always been given
So I can't always make her laugh
But I'm proud to say
And I won't forget

The time spent layin' by her side
The time spent layin' by her side
Dreams like this must die
And a dream like this must die
Dream like this must

Well I wake up in the morning, and I jump straight out of bed.
Grab a hold of that luminous jacket and shake that fuzzy head.
I don't have time for a fancy breakfast or put muesli in a bowl.
I just head to the Statoil garage for the Jumbo Breakfast Roll.

Two eggs, two rashers, two sausages, two bacon, Two puddings, one black, one white.

All placed like a tower on top of each other and then wrapped up good and
tight.

If you're having some tea the milks over there and you'll find sugar in the bowl.
Says she do you want some sauce on that? says I, I do in my roll.

Of all the money that e'er I had
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

Something a little different:

I ran away in floods of shame
I’ll never tell how close I came
As I crossed the Holland Road
Well you went left and I went right
As the moon hung proud and bright
You would have loved it here tonight

It's evening, you're tired
You sleep walk, a robot out to the street
Are you crazy to want this, even for a while? you're driving, it's rush hour
The cars on the freeway are moving backwards
Into a wall of fire
Backwards
Into a wall of fire

We're done lying for a living
The strange days have come and you're gone
You're gone
Either dead or dying
Either dead or trying to go
Good morning
Don't cop out

Strange Days
Matthew Good Band
Beautiful Midnight

Love that song, it both takes me back and moves me lyrically.

Time for a little blast from the past:

Long as I remember The rain been comin' down.
Clouds of myst'ry pourin' Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Tryin' to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

I went down Virginia, Seekin' shelter from the storm.
Caught up in the fable, I watched the tower grow.
Five year plans and new deals, Wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder, Still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.

Heard the singers playin', How we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together, Tryin' to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin', Fallin' on my ears.
And I wonder, Still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.
