Load was hit & miss, but Re-Load really grabbed hold of the thread. It's a shame they weren't able to follow up on it, as they slowly imploded. St. Anger was pretty bad, yeah, but "I Disappear is a forgotten song that rocks pretty damn hard.

I actually feel like it's the other way around. I thought Load the better of the two. King Nothing, Hero of the Day, Mama Said, Outlaw Torn, Until it Sleeps, they were the staples that really made that album. Re-Load does admirably with Fuel, Low Man's Lyric, Carpe Diem, Unforgiven II and The Memory Remains, but I thought Load just the more solid outing.

Mama they try and break me

The window burns to light the way back home
A light that warms no matter where they've gone

They're off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone's wicked way

Still the window burns
Time so slowly turns
And someone there is sighing
Keepers of the flames
Do ya feel your name?
Can't you hear your babies crying?

Load gets bogged down in filler, for me. There's not much dynamic range through a lot of the album, with a bunch of songs just bleeding into each other. Re-Load is a lot more adventurous, so while the highs aren't as high as with Load, it holds up much better as an album you can listen to start to finish.

I certainly see that point. The highs of Load spoke to me more than the highs of Re-Load though, all in all. Speaking of, the S&M version of Outlaw Torn came up on iTunes, that's one song that really was done marvelously with the orchestral backing of the late, legendary Michael Kamen.

I ride the dirt, I ride the tide
For you
I search the outside, search inside
For you

To take back what you left me
I know I'll always burn to be
The one who seeks so I may find
And now I wait my whole lifetime

My outlaw torn
My outlaw torn
And I'm torn

"There must be some way out of here" said the joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion", I can't get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.

"No reason to get excited", the thief he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late".

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

All Along The Watchtower
Bob Dylan (famously covered by Jimi Hendrix)
John Wesley Harding (covered by JH Experience on Electric Ladyland)

Wanna show you something like the joy inside my heart
Seems I've been living in the temple of the dog
Where would I live, if I were a man of golden words?
Or would I live at all?

Words and music, my only tools
Communication

And on her arrival, I will set free the birds
It's a pretty time of year when the mountains sing out loud
Tell me, Mr. Golden Words how's about the world?
Tell me can you tell me at all yeah?

Man of Golden Words
Mother Love Bone
Mother Love Bone

My favourite song by Mother Love Bone and a song that cracks my top 5 overall. The chorus has even been etched into my flesh.

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by
You never get to stop and open your eyes
One day you're waiting for the sky to fall
The next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin - this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

Lovers in a Dangerous Time
Bruce Cockburn
Stealing Fire

Also famously covered by the Barenaked Ladies on the Bruce Cockburn tribute album Kick At The Darkness

It really is a beautiful song. It's unfortunate that it took me so long to appreciate the Barenaked Ladies.

Pearl Jam did well with Lightning Bolt, this song makes frequent runs on my iTunes:

Let me catch my breath to breathe
And reach across the bed
Just to know we're safe
I am a grateful man

The slightest bit of light
And I can see you clear
Oh, have to take your hand
And feel your breath for fear this someday will be over

I pull you close, so much to lose knowing that nothing lasts forever
I didn't care before you were here.
I danced in laughter with the everafter
But all things change
Let this remain

Sirens

something about aaron lewis' high notes when singing 'black' from pearl jam on the family values tour cd is spine tingling.

Haven't heard it, I'll have to give it a listen. Shinedown do a very good version of that on the Smith & Myers acoustic album.

That Smith & Myers cover didn't grab me. Song requires more emotional range than they could deliver.

I thought it was fantastic. Brent Smith's voice lent it a special quality that made it very different from Eddie Vedder's. Not better, but very much it's own. It was my second favourite from the Smith & Myers album, first being Adele's Someone Like You.

Simple Man, Dock of the Bay, and Blue on Black are the best I've heard from them. I find a lot of their stuff is just too precise to have much depth.

Simple Man wasn't included in that Smith & Myers compilation of covers, but it did inspire them to do more covers. Amazing cover by the way though.

The girl works at the store sweet Jane St. Clair
Was dazzled by her smile while I shopped there
it wasn't long before I lived with her
I sang her songs while she dyed her hair

Jane, divided, but I can't decide what side I'm on
Jane decided only cowards stay, while traitors run
Jane, Jane

I'd bring her gold and frankincense and myrrh
She thought that I was making fun of her
She made me feel I was fourteen again
That's why she thinks it's cooler if we'd just stay friends

Jane doesn't think a man could ever be faithful
Jane isn't giving me a chance to be shameful
Jane, Jane

Maybe You Should Drive

Another Barenaked song that's been surfacing on my playlist lately.

A song that never gets lost far in my musical shuffle:

Threw you the obvious and you flew with it on your back,
A name in your recollection, down among a million same.
Difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed, and passed over
When I've looked right through, see you naked but oblivious.

And you don't see me.

But I threw you the obvious, just to see if there's more behind the
Eyes of a fallen angel, eyes of a tragedy.
Here I am expecting just a little bit too much from the wounded
But I see, see through it all, see through, see you.
