Re: 90th Academy Awards
Happy for Christopher Nolan on finally receiving a Best Director nomination but there were too few Blade Runner 2049 nominations for my liking.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
Get Out was one of the films I felt nauseated hearing about considering its month-long hype on my social media timeline. As of today, it's the only film I've properly seen in the Best Picture category.
I don't expect Get Out to win, but I am glad it got the nomination. I am a big horror movie fan, even more-so with horror-comedy. Get Out definitely deserved the praise it received with its keen attention to detail and providing smart commentary on top of a good horror story without hamfisting any message. I never much cared for Jordan Peele as a comedian, so the biggest detraction from this film in my book is how sometimes the humor reflected something off a Key & Peele skit. Only personal preference.
Luckily I have a month to check the rest of the films out, but I'll probably skip The Post considering a close friend of mine described it with, "yep, it's a movie." I love the lineup this year, but I tend to avoid any oscar-bait (ahem, 2015's Spotlight, Bridge of Spies, and Brooklyn).
Here's hoping Roger Deakins gets awarded for cinematography. I haven't seen Blade Runner 2049, but I'm well aware of his past works in Villenueve films: Sicario and Prisoners in particular. I also just recently saw The Big Lebowski for the first time, and his name stood out to me in the opening credits. The dream sequence in Lebowski is honestly Oscar-worthy alone.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
From what I've heard Three Billboards and The Post are the most "Oscar-baity" movies of the bunch. Probably won't check either out.
My money would be on either Shape of Water or Get Out getting Best Picture and the guy who doesn't win Best Picture (Del Toro or Jordan Peele) to get Best Director.
Best Actor and Actress are probably the most stacked that they've been in years. While you can't count out academy favorites like Denzel or Meryl Streep, I don't expect either of them to win. I'm pulling for Daniel Kaluuya, but I would say they'll give it to Gary Oldman, as it's his turn to win (something the Academy does, see Leo's win a few years ago) and that's also why I think Sam Rockwell will get the Supporting Actors win and Allison Janney to win for Supporting Actress (although a Laurie Metclaf, Mary J. Blige, or another win for Octavia Spencer wouldn't bother me). Also pulling for Margot Robbie, but more than likely the leading lady from Shape of Water will get that win.
Coco easily gets the Best Animated Oscar as well.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
Coco is terrific! Gary Oldman should win best actor even though the movie is so-so. The Three Billboards love I just don't get. The Post I thought was surprisingly decent.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
I'm going to see Coco again on Friday.
The show itself is going to be interesting as it's the first show fully within the Trump Era of the Presidency and of course with all the fallout of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements. More than likely some folks won't make it to next year's show.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
A lot of categories that could go a number of ways. Why people took to Three Billboards instead of Wind River, a better film I just don't get.

Well, less than a week to go.
Looks like they are giving Jimmy Kimmel another chance to screw up again. LOL!
I wonder what the big complaints wiil be about this year?
Something about women or harassment I suppose.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
Show notes:
The show overall seemed a bit mediocre to me.
The montages were pretty well done, but it's always the same preachy messages.
They did a good job keeping the acceptance speaches from being too long winded, and the political grandstanding to a minimum. The social issues mentioned were pretty much as expected.
From most of the predictions I had seen, there wasn't really any big surprises. No major screw ups!
Kobe Bryant gets an Oscar for ANIMATION??
OK, he wrote a poem and narrated a short film.
Can't wait to see his next animated cartoon.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
Felt good to see Jordan Peele get the win. Who would've thought that the Player Formerly Known as Mouse Cop would get a damn Oscar?!
Also, weird that all-time great basketball player Kobe Bryant now has an Oscar for an Animated Short. Surprised that he was even nominated, let alone won.

Re: 90th Academy Awards
That's incredible Kobe has an Oscar. Some overlap in achievement his career has. So much for the EGOT.
