WWR Stardom: Women's Wrestling!

Post by endless » Fri Apr 29, 2016 5:04 pm

So, you guys don't have a thread for one of the best promotions in the world right now, Stardom. Let's fix that with an FAQ:

1 - What is Stardom?
Stardom is a Women's Pro Wrestling(Joshi Puroresu) promotion from Japan. It started in 2010. They run a handful of minor shows each month(100-300 people) and a few major tournaments a few times a year.

2 - How is the wrestling style of Stardom?
Most of the ladies in Stardom wrestle a mix hard hitting japanese strong style, traditional American style, and a bit of Lucha. The matches tend to be fast pace and they usually last 5-15 minutes. There is also quiet a bit of comedy mixed into the product. It’s really fun to watch.

3 - Who Wrestles in Stardom?
Stardom has a mix of Japanese and international talent. They bring in UK, US, and Mexican talent on a regular basis. Some of the notable current international women that wrestle in Stardom are Santana Garrett(from Shine, TNA, and a few NXT matches), Alpha Female(various European promotions and TNA), Chelsea Green(Lance Storm Trainee and the latest season of Tough Enough), and Alex Lee(Lance Storm trainee and the first Australian woman signed by WWE). In past, Sara Stock(Dark Angel), Cheerleader Melissa, Christina Von Eerie among others have also wrestled for Stardom.

4 - Who are the Champions of Stardom?
These are the championships of Stardom:
World of Stardom Championship(World title) - Io Shirai. Arguably the best female athlete in wrestling today. She can do it all:

Wonder of Stardom Championship(Mid card title) - Santana Garrett. One of the best woman wrestlers in the indies today.

High Speed Championship(Cruiserweight Title) - Mayu Iwatani. One of the fastest and hardest hitting women in wrestling:

Goddesses of Stardom Championship(Tag Team Title) - Thunder Rock(Shirai and Iwatani).
Artist of Stardom Championship(Trios Title) - Threedom(Shirai, Iwatani, and Kairi Hojo). Kairi Hojo is best known for having the best elbow drop ever:

5 - Where can I watch Stardom?
Stardom has a paid English Youtube channel called Stardom World where they post daily content. It’s $4.99USD per month. They post all their shows on there one or two matches per day at a time. They also do the occasional feature it interviewing their wrestlers. I think it’s worth it for me. You can also find the occasional match here or there if you know where to look and want to sample the product.

6 - Anything else that we should know about Stardom?
-They have a heel stable called Oedo Tai. They are pretty fun.
-On occasion they have sign along’s with the roster. It’s silly but fun.
-A few of the wrestlers look 12 years old, which is weird. But whatever.
-The Cinderella Tournament(Their version of the King of the Ring) happens today. They'll probably put those videos up during the upcoming week.

I don’t know. Give Stardom a shot. It’s a really easy and fun company to get into.

That bridging suplex sure doesn't look like it's got enough cushioning to keep from squishing her cervical spine.

Stardom transitioned their video service from Youtube to a stand alone site. I signed up. Here are my thoughts.
Cons:
* Flash video player. It works on Windows just fine, but it doesn't work on my Android phone. Flash is also a dying technology that no one should be using in 2016. This should really be an HTML5 player instead.
* Not everything that was on Youtube is on the site yet. It will be, but they are still migrating over and they prioritized the new content over the old stuff. The Youtube channel is shutdown as well, so it might take sometime to get access to all the stuff that we had before. Overall, I would say that about 1/4 to 1/3 of the Youtube content is missing, but that's made up of mostly of early 2016 shows and 2011 matches.
*The plan is to have everything that Stardom ever did on the new site, but I don't know if that's going to take days, weeks, or months. No mention of a time table for that.
* No mention of an app. I don't think there will be a simple mobile solution because Stardom is small and apps take money.

Pros:
* Simple enough sign up process. As promised everything remained in English. The site is easy to navigate. I had no issues with payment. One small issue is that the confirmation emails are sent in Japanese, but you can translate them if you are using Google Chrome. And even if you don't, you can still figure out that the big link is to finish the sign up process.
* Like I said, the site is dead simple to navigate. It's easier to find stuff than the Youtube channel was. Everything is categorized well and in chronological order.
* On a Windows machine with decent internet the video playback is smooth. On par with the WWE Network, maybe better. At least early on I haven't experienced lag.
* It's cheap. About $7.31 USD today.
* The site has additional content that wasn't on Youtube.
1 - They have an interview segment with the owner and booker of Stardom, Rossy Ogawa(the old man that you see on occasion). He's been in involved in Japanese wrestling for over 40 years, and a lot of that time has been spent with Joshi.
2- Categories for international Stardom shows. Right now they have the US and European shows that Stardom did in 2015 and 2016.

Overall, it still recommend the service. It's still the same good wrestling. The price Vs content ratio is still good. Hundreds of hours worth of some of the best wrestling in the world with new content almost everyday. If you don't mind watching on your computer then it's damn near perfect. Give it a try: http://www.stardom-world.com/

Kairi Hojo just had her farewell show in Stardom today/last night. She's on her way to WWE. I can already tell I'm going cry like a fucking baby when I watch it later this week.
